Healing through EMDR

1409500496 1The days we wish we could forget…

Our past is our present. As much as we would like to say it’s not, it is.

Your core vibrates with fear, anger, sadness, shame, and guilt because of events outside of your control.

Too often, you’re transported back to those god-awful days filled with neglect, abuse, fear, and violence.

You might be gaslighting yourself by saying,

“It wasn’t that bad.”

But then you wonder why you can’t shake the feeling that something just isn’t right inside.

Relationships are hard…

There’s that nagging voice inside you telling you you’re not good enough…

You feel like you’re always doing something wrong with friends and family… at work and at home…

In life.

1084354871Trauma: It’s effing hard to recover from…

… especially when things in your life are constantly reminding you of it.

Facing your trauma is one of the bravest things you can do. Intentionally looking back at the hardest moments of your life and thinking hard about how they affected you is no small feat.

Most of us walk through our lives without questioning the terrible things that happened to us… or just accept that we must live with the effects of trauma.

Or we placate ourselves with platitudes about how it actually “made us stronger.”

That’s unfortunate: One… because it’s not true; and two… because it keeps us from doing something that could actually help.

But if you look trauma in the face…

It can be your biggest strength!

What if you acknowledge that hurt child inside of you that feels broken, angry, sad, or scared?

What if you could nourish that part of you that didn’t receive what you needed to feel secure, confident, supported, and deserving of love?

What if you could live detached from all the bad memories that currently plague you?

It would probably feel pretty good to feel cool, calm, and collected.

How nice would it be to know what healthy relationships look like… going into them knowing you deserve love and respect?

You would feel more confident at work, knowing you’re good enough to accomplish any task – that you’re going to achieve great things in life!

Your heart would be open in a healthy way so that you could let your guard down with friends and family.

Change your life by moving your eyes!

If science didn’t tell us otherwise, I would think EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) was magic.

One of the hardest things about therapy is rehashing all the gritty details of your painful memories (and feeling like the talking isn’t doing much to help you).

EMDR is different because most of the “narrative work” is done inside your mind.

You will replay memories in your mind while moving your eyes back and forth. When you do this, your brain will start to rewire how you think about those challenging memories.

By replaying memories in your mind, you become desensitized to the pain connected to them. You will start reprocessing how you view what happened, making new connections and realizations about your role in your memories.

I’m there to guide, support, and challenge you, but clients do most of the work internally and quickly notice shifts in their reactions to those troubling memories.

Then you start to feel better!

By decreasing the pain associated with tough memories, you’ll be able to see those situations through a new lens. You’ll benefit from a new perspective on life that reduces anxiety, depression, and other trauma-related challenges.

Whether you’re troubled by loss, neglect, abuse, violence, or something else, EMDR can help you reframe your relationship to those memories. You’ll realize it wasn’t your fault – you’re not to blame. And when you truly get that, you can put down all that weight you’ve been carrying.

Research has shown that in more than 20 empirical research studies, EMDR has been shown to reduce the effects of trauma and other mental health symptoms. Science says it…

And so do I! I’ve been through my own EMDR therapy, and I’m a true believer.

“I’ve been in therapy for years, and it wasn’t until EMDR that I finally started to see a significant difference in my life.”
